Preparation is critical to successfully navigating through an emergency to safety. The City of San Rafael Emergency Management team is committed to the preparedness of our whole community. This includes working with community groups and leaders, businesses and individuals across the City to enhance our combined disaster resiliency from the ground up.

The first step to being prepared is awareness.

Knowing what disasters are possible in your community helps to make your emergency plans more effective. Understanding how you will be warned of a danger means that you will know when to put your plans into action.

Sign up on Alert Marin to receive critical information quickly in a variety of situations, such as severe weather, flooding, wildfire, earthquakes, missing persons and evacuations of buildings or neighborhoods. You’ll get time-sensitive messages wherever you specify, such as your home, mobile or business phones, email address, text messages and more. NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards (NWR) is a nationwide network of radio stations broadcasting continuous weather information directly from the nearest National Weather Service office. NWR broadcasts official Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Prepare for a disaster

The disaster resiliency of our communities is directly tied to the preparedness of individuals, households and small businesses.

First response and emergency management agencies work hard to ensure that they are ready, but emergency resources are limited. In the U.S., there is (on average) only one first responder for every 200 people in the community. The ability of individuals to take care of themselves as much as possible allows those limited resources to respond to those who cannot take care of themselves.
